Our Approach

The standard evaluates potential noise impacts by comparing the specific sound level produced by the new source against the pre-existing background sound level (L_A90) at the sensitive receptor location. This requires rigorous baseline sound monitoring, often extending over multiple days to capture a representative acoustic profile.

Noise Penalties

Not all noises are perceived equally. To account for this, specific penalties are applied to the calculated noise level:

• Penalties: Decibel penalties are applied if the sound has specific characteristics, such as tonality (whines, hums), impulsivity (bangs, clatters), or intermittency. Even a quiet sound can be disruptive if it has a noticeable tone.
• Difference of +10 dB or more: Likely to indicate a significant adverse impact, depending on the context.
• Difference of around +5 dB: Likely to indicate an adverse impact, depending on the context.
• Lower Differences: Where the rating level does not exceed the background sound level, this is generally an indication of low impact.
